Nasrin Sotoudeh is an Iranian human rights lawyer and activist who has worked to promote women's and children's rights in Iran.
She has represented many high-profile cases, including women's rights activists, political prisoners, and juvenile offenders facing the death penalty.
Sotoudeh has also been an advocate for freedom of expression and the rule of law in Iran, and has spoken out against the country's harsh treatment of political dissidents, journalists, and minority groups.
For her work as a human rights lawyer, Sotoudeh has faced persecution and imprisonment in Iran.
In 2010, she was sentenced to 11 years in prison on charges of "acting against national security" and "propaganda against the regime." She was released in 2013 following an international campaign for her freedom, but was re-arrested in 2018 on similar charges and sentenced to an additional 38 years in prison and 148 lashes.
Sotoudeh's imprisonment and treatment by the Iranian government have drawn widespread condemnation from human rights organizations and governments around the world.
She has been the recipient of numerous international awards for her work, including the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in 2012 and the PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Award in 2019.
