Shirin Neshat is an Iranian artist, photographer, and filmmaker who has gained international recognition for her work exploring issues of identity, gender, and politics in the context of Iranian and Islamic culture.

Her early work consisted of black-and-white photographs that explored the experience of women in Iran, often featuring calligraphic texts or symbols inscribed over the subjects' faces and bodies. Neshat's later work has expanded to include video installations, feature films, and multimedia performances, often drawing on her own experiences as an Iranian artist living in exile in the United States.

Some of her most notable works include the video installation "Turbulent" (1998), which won the International Award at the Venice Biennale, and the feature film "Women Without Men" (2009), which won the Silver Lion at the Venice Film Festival.

In addition to her artistic work, Neshat has been an outspoken critic of Iran's government and human rights abuses, and has been involved in a number of activist and advocacy efforts aimed at promoting women's rights and freedom of expression in Iran and other countries.

She has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including the Praemium Imperiale in 2017, and has exhibited her art in galleries and museums around the world.
